Google’s new guidance does not kill GEO. It makes GEO more accountable.
On May 15, 2026, Google Search published a new official resource for website owners, SEOs, and developers who want to appear in generative AI features. The announcement highlights valuable non-commodity content, foundational SEO, mythbusting around AEO and GEO, and early guidance for AI agents.
The practical message is simple: there is no secret technical layer that replaces good search work. For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, strong SEO foundations and distinctive, useful content still do most of the heavy lifting.
That is good news for serious teams. It replaces a growing pile of speculative hacks with a clearer standard.
What Google actually announced
The May 15 Search Central announcement introduced a guide focused specifically on generative AI features in Google Search. Google says the guide covers five broad areas:
- valuable, unique, non-commodity content;
- local, shopping, image, and video information;
- common AEO and GEO misconceptions;
- initial considerations for AI agents; and
- why SEO best practices remain foundational.
The detailed guide goes further. It explains that Google’s generative features are connected to its core Search ranking and quality systems. It describes retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out, where a system may issue several related searches to build a response. It then turns to what creators should do—and what they can safely ignore.
The biggest clarification: Google treats this as SEO
Google acknowledges that people use the terms AEO and GEO for work focused on AI search visibility. From Google Search’s perspective, however, optimizing for generative AI search is still optimizing for the search experience and therefore still SEO.
This does not mean every AI platform behaves like Google, or that measuring generated answers is identical to measuring blue links. It means the path into Google’s generative features is rooted in Search. Crawlability, indexability, quality, relevance, and clear page experience remain central.

No special file or schema will unlock Google’s AI features
Google explicitly says it does not use LLMS.txt or similar special AI files for Search. Maintaining one for another service will neither help nor harm visibility in Google Search, according to the guide.
The same restraint applies to schema. Structured data remains useful when it accurately describes a page and supports established search features, but Google says there is no special schema.org markup required for generative AI search.
That distinction matters. A technically valid file can be useful for a particular consumer without being a ranking shortcut. A team should know which system uses an implementation before adding it to the roadmap.
Do not confuse making content accessible with earning inclusion. Technical access is necessary in many cases, but it is not a substitute for relevance, usefulness, or trust.
Google also pushes back on content made for machines
The guide says creators do not need to rewrite content into a special AI style, capture every long-tail wording, or split every page into tiny chunks. Google’s systems can understand meaning and retrieve relevant passages from pages with multiple topics.
That should be a relief. Some GEO advice has encouraged unnatural pages made of dozens of isolated answer blocks. Clear structure helps readers and retrieval, but clarity is not the same as fragmentation.
Google’s stronger recommendation is to publish unique, compelling work that goes beyond information already available everywhere. First-hand experience, original analysis, useful tools, proprietary data, and a well-supported point of view are harder to commoditize than another summary of the top ten results.
This also aligns with Google’s existing guidance on people-first content and scaled content abuse. Using generative tools is not automatically a problem. Publishing large volumes without adding value can be.
What this means for a practical GEO program
1. Keep technical SEO on the critical path
Make sure important pages are crawlable, indexable, internally linked, fast enough to use, and available as text. Maintain accurate canonicals and sitemaps. Test rendering. These tasks are not glamorous, but a page Google cannot reliably process is a poor candidate for retrieval.
2. Invest in evidence, not output volume
Give each page a reason to exist. Add expertise, examples, methods, tradeoffs, original data, or a genuinely useful decision framework. If a draft only rearranges common knowledge, it is unlikely to build a durable advantage.
3. Cover the real information need
Query fan-out means one complex question may cause Google to explore related subtopics. Build connected topic coverage around the customer’s decision: requirements, use cases, comparisons, limitations, implementation, and proof. Use natural internal links rather than stuffing one page with every phrase.
4. Maintain accurate multimodal and business information
For relevant businesses, Google points to images, video, Merchant Center, and Business Profile information. The web page is still important, but the complete entity may extend across established Google surfaces.
5. Measure the answer layer separately

What teams should stop doing
- Stop presenting unverified GEO theories as Google requirements.
- Stop producing thin pages for every prompt wording.
- Stop treating structured data as a guarantee of AI inclusion.
- Stop buying inauthentic mentions; Google says its core ranking and spam systems still apply.
- Stop using a third-party visibility score as if it were an internal Google metric.
Google specifically warns that third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems. That is an important standard for vendors, including us. A monitoring platform can observe outputs, organize evidence, and help a team act. It should not claim privileged knowledge of a model’s internal ranking.

It helps answer a different operational question: across the prompts and AI surfaces your buyers use, where does your brand appear, which competitors appear instead, and which sources or message gaps repeat?
That observed output can guide content and distribution work. If a Google AI answer repeatedly cites a competitor’s detailed integration page, that is a clue to inspect—not proof of a ranking formula. If your own page is indexed but described inaccurately, the next action may be clearer facts and stronger corroboration.

Google’s May 15 guidance narrows the space for shortcuts. For Google Search, generative visibility rests on familiar foundations: accessible pages, useful information, reliable signals, and content with something original to contribute.
GEO still has a job. It maps the questions people ask, observes the generated answers, and turns missing or inaccurate visibility into work. The best version is not a replacement for SEO. It is a feedback loop that makes SEO, content, and digital PR more responsive to the answer layer.
